The project consists of a dry dock with a diaphragm wall on three sides of the proposed excavation. The owner approached us for our opinion on two proposals he had to temporarily block the seaside of the excavation in order to allow dewatering and excavation to construct the raft which will serve as the dry dock floor and support the operable water gate.
We studied the second solution (dam) with the aim of deleting the outside sheet piles and using ground anchors to support the inner sheet piles. This proved to be around half the cost. We provided a silt screen and started excavating and dumping in the sea to form a berm to house the anchors. Then we drove the sheet piles and started the dewatering and further excavation. When we reached the optimum anchor level we executed the anchors and carried on with the full excavation thus saving nearly half the cost.
