We were approached to check the ground slab design for a mall where the spans were 9m x 18m and piles were used to support the columns. The ground level was framed at a 9m x9m grid of beams supporting a 300mm heavily reinforced solid slab. Intermediate piles were introduced in the 18m direction solely to support these beams.
We requested a saturated zone load test to be conducted on site at the worst borehole location, where a constant head of water was maintained for one month around a 3m x 3m loaded zone. When negligible settlement was recorded in the above test, we deleted the piles in the whole project and went to a shallow foundation solution with a 150mm grade slab, thus achieving massive savings.
